NMA'S 50TH ANNUAL CONVENTION TARGETING TODAY'S MEAT INDUSTRY ISSUES OAKLAND, CA -- National Meat Association's 50th Annual Convention, featuring 16 specialized Round Table seminars, two key general sessions and topical meetings, will target the most pertinent issues facing today's meat industry. "NMA's education program is diverse, informative and timely,." says NMA Executive Director Rosemary Mucklow. "The industry relies on NMA to provide a strong program featuring the latest information from high-quality experts. Through a new Round Table format, NMA will meet this need in an innovated and enhanced fashion." The Round Table format involves a collection of industry experts from across the United States who will tackle significant issues and hold interactive discussions in their areas of expertise. Designated questioners will help facilitate discussions and ensure that attendees take away a working knowledge of information they can apply to their business. Round Table topics for NMA's 1996 Convention include: Microbial Testing: The Right & The Wrong; Standard Operating Procedures and Process Control Primer; Workforce 2000 Impact; Breaking Export Barriers; Let's Talk Microbes: Good & Bad; Making HACCP Work for Both Small and Large Businesses; Making Meat The Main Course; USDA Choice: The Equivalency Issue; New Processing Technologies; The New Inspection Rules; Concentration Study: Will It Make A Difference?; The 90's Consumers: What They Want & Expect; Where Are the Pathogen Kill Technologies?; Improving Relations Between Plant Officials & FSISers; Food Safety As A Marketing Strategy; and Strong Regional Packers Find Their Niche. (A list of sessions and speakers is enclosed.) The 1996 program will also be highlighted with keynote presentations by notable speakers. The opening General Session on Thursday, February 15 features Acting Under Secretary for Food Safety Michael Taylor. Mr. Taylor will provide valuable insight on changes taking place in the inspection program as well as field questions from a panel of industry experts. On Saturday, February 16, Congressman Jack Kingston (R-GA) will address attendees and discuss activities of today's Congress. NMA has also incorporated several issue-focused meetings into the Convention program to inform attendees and help facilitate discussion on these hot topics. On the afternoon of Thursday, February 15, members are invited to join NMA for an Update on Dry Sausage Challenge Studies and/or Cow/Slaughterers Meeting.
